About Simon Zablotsky
Having come from a career in engineering and industry to working with a broad range of metals and composite materials, I decided to pursue my passion for art and design and started a business creating sculptural metal works incorporating various timber elements. My work achievements include numerous public art works and private commissions.
I have a passion and desire to work with timber and to design furniture which naturally led me to University of Tasmania to study Fine Furniture. The environment is another great passion of mine and often the flowing forms and organic shapes find their way into my designs. Other inspirations are from Scandinavian Design, Arts and Crafts.
I am excited by combining various metals with timber and the many design possibilities that this creates. With a fitter machining trade background I have the ability to incorporate mechanical and electronic devices into my furniture morphing metal into wood creating items of high distinction. Fine handcut detailed joinery to CNC technology and lasercutting all find their way into my furniture, often all techniques will be applied to the same piece. For example a finely crafted entertainment unit with electronic TV lift mechanism and electronically operated hight adjustable furniture such as lecterns.
My aim is to produce contemporary furnishings of the highest standard, with a focus on a conservative use of Australian timbers procured from sustainable resources where possible.
I have won awards from the Australian Wood Review and had a piece acquired in the permanent collection of the Tasmanian Design Centre, which was featured on ABC's Collectors. Many of my public art commissions can be viewed in the Hunter and Illawarra regions and I have worked collaboratively with a number of well known artists and sculptors.
